Ma-Ka-Tai-Me-She-Kia-Kiak Lodge #140 History by Year 1938-1971
1938:  Mr. E.A. Rowley, who was Field Executive in the Blackhawk Area Council, visitied a Scout Camp in Wisconsin and was taken into the Order of the Arrow. Upon returning to the Council he started a Lodge here. There were about ten fellows who went up to Camp Delavan and were inducted by a ritual team of West Suburban Council.

1939:  The Lodge grew to a membership of forty-four. The members of the Order were chosen by those who had been inducted in 1938. This method was used because the first members had not been properly instructed. This year the Lodge dues were set at fifty cents per year. The Lodge Totem of a hammered copper arrowhead suspended around the neck with a leather thong was adopted. Mr. Enos Keithley chose this totem from his collection of neckerchief slides.

1940:  The Scouts were permitted to vote on the members of the Order of the Arrow. The first Christmas banquet was held in the Nelson Hotel in Rockford. This year the Lodge learned that the name Blackhawk was already taken by another Lodge, so it was proposed that the Lodge consider the Indian name of Blackhawk which is Ma-Ka-Tai-Me-She-Kia-Kiak. This proposal was left for further consideration. There were thirty-one additional members inducted this year. The Brotherhood Honor was begun, and the first members were Enos Keithley, Russell Malueg, and Hugh Smith.

1944:  At the first fall convention the members of the Arrow decided that it was necessary to becom more strict if they wanted to have a good Lodge. The stones that members brought to camp were used to build an alther in the council Ring. THe plan that we charge each member $5.00 to build an Order of the Arrow dining shelter for Camp Lowden was approved. The present constitution was drawn up in its rough draft. The Christmas Banquet and Dance was held in Belvidere at which time the present constitution was adopted.

The second annual fall convention was held at Camp Lowden and was very successful because the spirit of cheerful service began to take effect. The members worked with the candidates and enjoyed it. The Council Camping Committee was asked for permission to use the Highlander campsite to build the dinin shelter. The Christmas Banquet and Dance was held in Mount Morris.

1946:  We started out the year with a spring party in Harvard. The third annual convention was very successful. The Order of the Arrow Dining Shelter was completed and was dedicated and given to the Council on August 11. Mr. C.J. McLean accepted the dining shelter in the name of the Council after Stuart Conover had dedicated it. Special thanks were extended to Eugene Woolsey, who had constructed the shelter almost entirely himself. The Lodge was divided into three chapters and the organization of these was begun at the Convention. The Vigil Honor was begun in 1946 and Mr. E.H. Woolsey, Robert Goll, and Berkeley Duncan were sent to the National Convention at Chanute Field, Illinoi to be inducted. Upon their return they inducted Dr. R.J. Mroz, Mr. C.W. Mulford, Mr. C.J. McLean, and Mr. Enos Keithley. This was the first year the Ma-Ka-Tai-Me-She-Kia-Kiak Lodge has had a delegation at the National Convention. There were 14 Delegates from our Lodge. We also had a delegation of four members at the Owassippe Lodge Area Fellowship Meeting. Our Christmas Banquet and Dance was held in Dixon. The Lodge started a Distinguished Service Award which consists of a bronze medal suspended on a green ribbon. This award is to be worn at all Lodge functions. The first medal was awarded to Mr. E.H. Wollsey for the outstanding service that he gave to the Lodge in building the dining shelter.

Our fall convention was a great success with 20 guests representing five nearby Lodges and 140 of our members in attendance. The present Lodge medallion was adopted. We continued to improve our dining shelter by making it suitable for winter camping. Our Christmas meeting was held in Rockford where we saw of movies of the Sixth World Jamboree held in France. The Lodge Manual was brought up to date and ordered. Rededication was transferred to a new location so that the ceremony might be more effective. The Christmas Banquet was held at the Log Lodge in Rockford on a very foggy night. 300 people were present at the very wet Fall Convention. At this time, there was talk of changing the present convention system to something more practical. There was also talk of making minor changes in the procedure for the Ordeal Ceremony so as to make it more impressive. The Lodge sent a delegation of six to the National Arrow Convention at Bloomington, Indiana. Inducted into the Vigil Honor were: Wayne Torgeson, Carl Christenson, Howard Fox and Eugene Flath.
